Every person at every talk or workshop
wants to leave with something practical -- an idea, a piece of information, or a
tool they can use to improve their corner of the work world. But some audiences want
a lot more. Such was the case with the Senior HR Development Forum, a Florida-based
group affiliated with the American Society of Training Development.
Made up of senior practitioners
in human resources, training, organizational development, and related consulting
fields, the group asked Tom to deliver an interactive two-hour session at one of
its quarterly meetings. But they were emphatic: nothing remedial! We're already experienced
in this area, they said. Give us the advanced version.
Tom planned accordingly. He added
a tutorial on how to use a detailed assessment tool -- figuring these veteran practitioners
would enjoy an addition to their toolkits. And he developed an in-depth "true
confessions" segment in which he shared some revealing stories about his own
change-management struggles over the years. The forthright approach sparked an impromptu
dialogue among group members, and together, they turned the session into a rich learning
experience.
We asked Tom for a "meaty"
presentation and we got it! His research is substantial and vital, and he brings
a wonderful blend of humor and insight.... His sharing of experiences talking
with real people and working with real leaders about issues that often go unmentioned
was invaluable to our group. It was a meeting that our members will be talking about
for quite some time.
-- Peter Sprague, Senior HR
Development Forum, ASTD

I loved your presentation -- the
visuals, your use of humor, your style. With the assessment, you've given me a valuable
tool for taking the pulse of my department's employees. I can't wait to get started!

Information Management, Columbus Children's Hospital
Tom's presentation style, combining
humor with practicality, really struck a positive chord with attendees. They left
the session with a smile -- and with a new set of tools to immediately use in the
workplace. We look forward to bringing Tom back for future conferences!
